Touch Kids Garden Activities

~ add texture with differently feeling leaves that are safe to touch for kids

~ create a little rockery with different sized, shaped and feeling rocks that tumble among the plants, vary smooth pebbles with roughly hewn river rocks

~ if you can add a little water feature , even a small pond where kids can dunk their hands into the water or a little garden fountain sprinkling water can be multisensory ( touch, see, hear the water fountain) ( always take extra care where water features and small kids are concerned and add the necessary saftey precautions !!!)

~ Soft lichens and mosses that are soft to the touch are Mayas favourite, especially after the rain when water has collected in the moss and can be squeezed about

~ if you have naturally low hanging branches these can be fun in a kids garden - swinging upon branches, climbing up a tree , touching different Tree barks are all excellent for the Touch experience in a kid garden

~ Smooth Stones (pebbles)
~ Textured Stones ( bricks, pathways)
~ wet/dry soil
~ Play bark
~ natural play equipment ( willow tunnels, treehouses , bean teepees)
~ soft Hammocks
~ Moss Seats
~ beautiful garden statues for kids
~ kids garden ponds ( touch water, slimey algae)

~ Stepping Stones

Plant Suggestions for
Sensory Gardens

~ when choosing plants that are going to be touched in your kids garden:

~ make sure that plants are safe to touch ie dont have any poisionous plant residue
~ plants that are going to be touched need to be hardy varieties that can handle a bit of rough and tumble

~ make them easy to reach, crawling low level along pathways or in raised beds

~ to add different textures think not only plants for kids but also walkways and surfaces like paving slabs, playbark, crushed gravel ( which is also good for the Sound Sensory Garden Part when walked upon)

~ you can add different types fo screening like bamboo cane screening or lattice fencing in different colours for added effect visually ( SEEING) and to touch ( nothing beats rattling a fingernail on a bamboo fence ;-) ( Touching, Hearing)
