We also loved growing a windowsill garden picnic- yummy

What you will Need for a Windowsill Herb Garden

~ Try recycling old pots, plastic yoghurt containers with added drainage holes

~ Kids love decorating terracotta pots before planting their basic herb garden design

~ Seeds or baby herb plants

~ A south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal but Maya also had success with cress and exptic plant pips on a north facing window that is quite bright
~ soil ( that needs to be kept moist)

~ avoid adding chemicals to culinary plants in your windowsill herb garden

An Indoor Garden is the easiest way to start a beginner garden with kids. It is easily managable and provides a good success rate in a realtively short time period

Indoor gardens as well as windowsill herb gardens are easily maintained and take little looking after if set up well from the start - just enjoy picking yummy herbs for dinner

Mini Windowsill Garden Organic Mushroom Kits
~ For Beginner Kid Gardeners a Mini Windowsill Garden is a good way to start.

~ Even little greenfingers can successfully grow a pot of chives or yummy cress.

~ We often find that age range stated are on the high site as Maya was quite happily growing herbs in her windowsill garden from age 4

~ ( just supervise some of the harder bits but enjoy the windowsill garden adventure )
Not quite grown on a sunny windowsill garden but in dark cupboard instead as growing mushrooms requires darkness And we love harvesting the edible button mushrooms for tea and will try shitake mushrooms next

~ Maya and her Dad have been experimenting with organic mushroom kits and it is really funny to "go into the cupboard" to water the mushrooms

~ Our Mushroom growing page will tell you a little more about our success rate
Windowsill Garden Book We Love

Linnea's Windowsill Garden

Maya loved Linneas book in Monets Garden and we saw this one as she wanted to create her own just like Linnea did - what a delightful book all about kid gardening, indoor gardening
The book is kind of like Linneas Garden Journal where she explains what she did day by day . And it shows that your dont have to have a great big backyard but can happily to create an indoor gardening patch of your own

We also love the cute drawings and Mr Bloom explainging a little garden science along the way. There are lots of activities with seeds, how to take cuttings and what to do with exotic fruit pips.
